The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods) dropping the SmackDown Live Tag Team Titles to The Usos at SummerSlam was one of the more surprising booking decisions of the show. Per a report from Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, The New Day losing the tag titles is part of a much bigger picture moving forward for the beloved trio.
Meltzer reports that WWE wants New Day to go down as one of the best tag teams in WWE history. They already hold the record for longest reigning tag team of all time, however, WWE officials are eying another record for The New Day. Meltzer stated that WWE wants to establish New Day as the “greatest tag team of all-time” by soon having them win more tag titles than any other team in WWE history.
The teams of The Hardys and Edge & Christian have both held the titles seven times while The Dudley Boyz have held them nine. When it’s all said and done, The New Day is expected to surpass those numbers and solidify themselves as one of, if not the, greatest amongst the bunch.
