Last night’s (Tues. November 13, 2018) episode of SmackDown Live certainly brought about a major surprise. In addition to developments regarding Becky Lynch’s situation, a huge change was made to the Universal Champion vs. WWE Title match at Survivor Series on Sunday.
In the main event of SmackDown Live, AJ Styles defended his WWE Title against Daniel Bryan. After the referee was knocked down during the match, Bryan hit Styles with a low blow. He then hit Styles with a flying knee to pick up the three count and win the WWE Title. After the win, Bryan continued to assault Styles, seemingly turn heel. Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reports that Bryan has been pitching a heel turn for quite some time.
This is likely due to the way he has been booked as a babyface lately. Also, at some point over the weekend, Vince McMahon reportedly had a change of heart and wanted to do Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series instead. Bryan’s heel turn was also determined before Becky Lynch’s injury. So this wasn’t something done because of Lynch’s removal from the card.
However, once the news with Lynch came to light, Vince decided to do it all on the same show, and pulled the trigger last night.
