Backstage News On Why The Rock’s SmackDown Promo Was Censored

As seen on this past Friday night’s episode of WWE SmackDown, The Rock made his long-awaited return to WWE television.

Both The Rock and Pat McAfee opened the show for a segment with Austin Theory. According to a report from Fightful Select, The Rock’s promo was not listed on internal rundowns of the show due to the fact that the company wanted to prevent the news from leaking.

As far as it pertains to the censors bleeping out much of The Rock’s promo, this was due to possible FCC violations. It was not a matter of the TV-PG rating as the TV rating is not enforced in the same way as movies (MPAA) and video games (ESRB) are. The TV-PG rating doesn’t prevent profanity from being used. It was simply a case of WWE and FOX not wanting to take any risks of receiving fines.

Finally, it was noted that there were a lot more people than usual in the Gorilla position for The Rock’s promo.
