AEW Undisputed World Champion Jon Moxley was reportedly against the idea of becoming Interim AEW World Champion following CM Punk’s injury in June.
After Punk publicly announced his foot injury, Moxley was crowned Interim AEW World Champion at Forbidden Door with a win over Hiroshi Tanahashi.
On this week’s Dynamite, Moxley unified the Interim AEW World Championship with Punk’s Liminal AEW World Championship, squashing the Chicago wrestler in minutes.
Addressing the match, which had originally been promoted for All Out, Dave Meltzer reported Moxley’s opposition to an interim title.
“It wasn’t a ratings ploy, although the timing was such that they definitely wanted to boost ratings, as much as Moxley becoming the real champion as he personally hated the interim thing, and it being a way to tell a different story.”
Moxley vs. Punk is still expected to headline AEW All Out 2022, which will take place next Sunday.
