In a follow up from our original story regarding the status of NJPW Wrestle Grand Slam (see below), the event will go on as scheduled and no postponement will take place as originally feared. NJPW has announced that Wrestle Grand Slam will take place on July 25th as planned, though it was noted that ticket sales for the show will end early on July 11th.

Here is the full statement from NJPW:

Wrestle Grand Slam to proceed July 25; ticket sales to end July 11
State of emergency to curtail ticket sales

Thank you for your continued support of New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

On July 25, ‘Godzilla vs Kong presents: Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome’ will proceed as planned, with NJPW continuing its commitment to safe events as held across Japan with fans for the past year.

However, in light of the recent announcement of another state of emergency across Tokyo and the subsequent restrictions this enforces on live events, we regret to announce that ticket sales for Wrestle Grand Slam will end at midnight JST on July 11.

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience this causes. We look forward to welcoming fans on July 25, with fan safety given the utmost priority.

For fans watching from home, Wrestle Grand Slam will be live in English or Japanese on NJPW World, and in English or French on FITE.

(ORIGINAL REPORT)

We have learned that NJPW’s Wrestle Grand Slam may be affected by the recent rise in cases of COVID-19 occurring once again in Japan. On Thursday, as reported by CNBC, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga (Japan’s Prime Minister) declared a state of emergency as a means to combat the wave of infections. This state of emergency will go into effect between July 12th and August 22nd and may be extended past August based on infection rate.

The Olympics are set to begin on July 23rd and NJPW Wrestle Grand Slam is scheduled at the Tokyo Dome on July 25th, featuring IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Takagi defending the title against Kota Ibushi. Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, this may very well affect the show or cause a postponement. At this time, NJPW has yet to comment or post a statement regarding status of Wrestle Grand Slam.
