Sports Illustrated reports that WWE had plans for Pat McAfee and Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers to team up for a big match last year.

McAfee made his WWE NXT in-ring debut at Takeover: XXX in August 2020 where he lost to Adam Cole. McAfee teamed with Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan, and Danny Burch for a loss to Cole and The Undisputed Era at Takeover: WarGames in December 2020.

The report notes there was serious internal discussion of having McAfee return to NXT after the WarGames loss with the idea for him to jump Cole and align himself with a new partner, Rodgers.

The feeling is that Rodgers would’ve brought instant mainstream notoriety to NXT. It’s unclear why the match didn’t happen.
