According to Dave Meltzer, there were two reasons why WWE added Roman Reigns into the Royal Rumble.
- The first reason he was added into the Rumble was so that they can build towards Roman and Undertaker’s planned match at WrestleMania 33, and that was helped with Roman eliminating The Undertaker.
- The second reason was because they wanted the eventual Rumble winner, Randy Orton, to get the biggest face reaction possible despite being a heel. WWE officials felt that eliminating Roman would accomplish that.
