In recent months, both CM Punk and Thunder Rosa went down with injuries during their respective title reigns.
Back in late June, CM Punk cut an in-ring promo on an episode of AEW Rampage to announce that he was injured and would need to undergo surgery.
On Wednesday night’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Thunder Rosa cut a brief backstage promo about her injury and needing time off. CM Punk’s promo lasted around 8 minutes, while Rosa got less than a minute.
During Thursday’s media conference call to promote Sunday’s All Out pay-per-view event, AEW President Tony Khan was asked why Rosa’s promo got much less time than CM Punk’s. In a very blunt response, Khan said it was a matter of ratings. He said,
“I give the TV time based on what I believe is going to draw the most ratings. If you want my honest opinion on an eight-minute Thunder Rosa promo vs an eight-minute CM Punk promo, then you’re going to get an honest answer, and I think the eight-minute CM Punk promo is probably going to do a better rating … To come out and do a live eight-minute promo, I’m not sure that would’ve been good for the television show, to be honest with you.”
