According to a report from Fightful Select, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae maintained a healthy relationship with WWE following their departure in December. Several sources say that after Vince McMahon’s retirement, many within the company were confident Gargano would return and that Triple H being promoted as Chief Content Officer was the “tipping point” for him coming back into the fold.
The report notes that Gargano was on good terms with the company before his contract expired. Sources in NXT thought the former NXT Champion handled the departure with “incredible professionalism,” pointing to how he helped to get Dexter Lumis, Austin Theory, and Indi Hartwell over. The report adds that Gargano knew he’d be taking time away from the ring starting in December, as much as a year before his contract expired.
Additionally, the report notes that Gargano and LeRae spoke with “the major companies” before ultimately re-signing with WWE.
