WWE’s Story Progression Issues & Problems

Is Smackdowns main event really planned under 24 hours?

Usually the WWE should have Raw and Smackdown planned out prior to the shows start, or even weeks ahead of time; but this isn’t a perfect world and obviously that doesn’t happen. Apparently there is so many problems with the creative development team that Smackdowns main event gets planned out during Raw, under 24 hours before Smackdown even begins!!

A new report states that plans for Smackdown are usually decided late Monday afternoons once Raw begins, and that both Vince and Triple H don’t begin talking about Smackdown until then. Remember Smackdown gets tapped on Tuesday which means that leaves under 24 hours for a full shows development.

About 6-7 pm on Monday, Vincent Kennedy McMahon will ask the writing staff for a main event for Smackdown which can be promoted on Raw, which leaves them scrambling to develop ideas for a big, promotional match. This is the main reason why matches on both Main Event and Smackdown which are advertised on Raw, often change.

Whats on the Mind Of Carnage?

This lack of readiness is surprising from a multi-billion dollar company such as the WWE. Stories should be set in stone weeks prior to the shows start and feuds should be worked out from beginning to end; with the understanding that things may change half way through, but the writers should have a contingency plan if that’s the case. Its not that difficult to take two guys, two teams, or two anything and create a captivating story. The WWE usually looks for writers with multiple years of experience, but no matter how many years of experience you have; it doesn’t help when Vince wants something changed or edited last minute and change anything, or everything on a whim. The writers should develop a system in which this doesn’t happen and stand against management when they want something changed immediately. I know it would be difficult but a story progression in the WWE should stem from a past feud, or guys with similar fighting styles that would make for a great match.

Feud setup could be easily described if a system were implemented:

1 – What Superstars will be involved in this feud?

2 – What actions will this feud stem from?

3 – How long will this feud last?

a) Start off slow, and if the feud gets allot of audience attention, transition to a longer progression.

4 – What and Who will be the breaking point?

5 – When and how will this feud be climaxed

6 – When shall this feud end and with what outcome.

This is the building blocks for a feud setup. Now granted i’m no expert but I’ve watched allot of wrestling in my time to understand and see the pattern that story development takes. Identify the most important aspects that will make this feud, and fill in the smaller segments that will reach those important aspects.

Story/ Character development doesn’t come easy when last minute changes occur, and this is the one reason why WWE story lines have taken a dramatic turn for the worst. With no consistency or care to identify talents worth show-casing I don’t see the WWE “wowing” us anytime soon.

Let me know your opinion on the creative team and what you would like to see.

Thank you for reading whats on my mind!

Carnage out!
