Taz speaks on the lashing.
The ECW legend knows it will be unpleasant, uncomfortable. MJF is taking this too far, and this is coming from Taz. But it does validate how badly Cody wants after MJF, for him to willingly submit to the strikes. Will Cody survive to then continue towards Revolution?

AEW’s Alex Marvez interviews the Inner Circle.
Jericho cuts Alex off before he even says a word, and takes the mic from him. “Did you see what just happened out there?! What piece of trash takes a spike and puts it in another man’s eye?!” Hypocrisy aside, Jericho is upset with Moxley like never before. Santana tells Moxley himself, “It’s no secret that I’ve had the absolute worst luck in my life.” But what Moxley just did was put gas on the fire! Now Santana brings out a side he never has before. Moxley tried to take Santana’s eye! He has no idea what it’s like living the 29 years Santana’s lived. But next week, he will get a walk through the darkness. Next week it will once again be eye for an eye, but who comes out still able to see the light?

AEW media wants an interview with Hangman Page.
But he’s in no mood. He has his belt and his beer, but the Bucks come back to keep asking him what happened. They were right there to tag! Hangman says he tried, but Nick says that if this attitude continues, he and Omega are going to lose the tag titles to SCU in the rematch next week. Matt was just about to ask what Hangman’s problem was, but he has a pretty clear idea. Matt takes away Hangman’s beer! But somehow Hangman has an entire pitcher to drink from! Is Hangman going to fuel himself with liquid courage all the way to Revolution?
AEW is only picking up speed towards Revolution!
Next week, Dynamite will be golden as the AEW Women’s World Championship and the AEW World Tag Team Championships are on the line! Can Riho survive Nyla Rose? Will Hangman be able to focus and fight alongside Omega? And of course, there will be that “Eye for an Eye” grudge match of Moxley VS Santana.
Then in two weeks, Atlanta will be Dynamite with a Tag Team Battle Royal! The winning duo will face the AEW World Tag Champions at Revolution in Chicago, regardless of who they are! Who comes out of the incredibly competitive field to go after gold? Plus, Wardlow is finally ready to debut! He and Cody will have their Steel Cage match per the conditions MJF placed on his Revolution match. But after tonight, what shape will the American Nightmare even be in?
Lastly, three weeks from now, the Dynamite just days before Revolution, the tiebreaker is here! The Bastard and the Best Bout Machine will be in a THIRTY MINUTE IRONMAN MATCH! Who comes out of this the decisive victor?
But there’s even BIGGER AEW news!
May 23, 2020, AEW Double or Nothing returns! The MGM Grand in Vegas will again host this incredible event, will you be there to witness it?
Dustin Rhodes speaks on tonight’s special and sadistic event.
“Tonight, my little brother is taking ten lashes from MJF.” As uncomfortable as this will be for the Rhodes Family, Dustin wants MJF to know. Cody is a lot tougher than you think. There is no doubt Cody will make it through.
MJF heads to the ring!
Wardlow accompanies the Salt of the Earth out as fans boo and jeer. MJF soaks it all up with a big smile on his face, but then Cody makes his own entrance. Fans cheer as Cody takes his time going to the ring and taking off his jacket. Cody joins MJF in the ring and seems rather touched by the support and encouragement of the fans. MJF mocks that, too. Cody takes off his vest and tie, and then his shirt. The tie and shirt become free souvenirs while MJF is given a mic. “Hold on, hold on, hold on.” MJF isn’t sure, his belt is so nice. Far too nice to touch Cody. So MJF wants to use Cody’s belt. Cody stares MJF down, but takes the belt off. Fans tell MJF what they think of him but Cody hands the belt over to MJF.
MJF tells Cody to turn around and stay still. He then snaps the belt at Cody, just to mess with him. Cody has to keep from hitting MJF because of the other condition MJF put on the Revolution match. MJF takes this serious now, and finally gives Cody the first lash! Cody shakes that one off, and now MJF takes off his jacket. But interestingly, the mercenaries return. For that matter, others come out to watch, such as Britt Baker, the Superbad couple, and Sammy Guevara. MJF gives Cody the second lash! Cody gets heated but he can’t hit MJF, no matter how much MJF eggs him on. Cody cools off, and MJF gives him the third! And it was pretty high, too. Cody staggers and drops to a knee but he gets up.
Here comes Arn Anderson! The Nightmare Coach storms his way to the ring but MJF tells him he can’t do anything about this. Arn does do something, by encouraging Cody to keep going. MJF taunts Arn as he takes off his shirt. Fans rally for Cody as MJF gives him the fourth lash! That one was on his arm and it really hurt. But MJF just grins and mocks Cody. “You wanna quit?! Then QUIT!!” Cody refuses to quit and fans fire up even more. MJF gives Cody the halfway point, fifth lash! Out comes Dustin! Dustin gets in the ring and Wardlow stands in his way. MJF says Dustin cant’ take the remaining five. It has to be Cody, so Dustin should just get out of MJF’s ring and watch like everyone else. Cody tells Dustin not to worry, but a big brother is a big brother.
Fans continue to call MJF by other names, but Cody stands back up. Sixth lash, and seventh without warning! But he just needs to take three more! The Young Bucks appear now, also supporting Cody. MJF shouts that it doesn’t matter how many friends show up, they can’t help Cody. Cody rolls out for just a moment and the Bucks encourage him to take those last three strikes. Cody fires himself up and fans fire up with him. MJF lounges on the ropes but is annoyed that Cody didn’t quit. Cody stands ready, but MJF gets in his face. Cody tells MJF to do it, so MJF gives him the eighth! “Stay down, b*tch! STAY DOWN!” But Cody refuses, and despite the stinging in his body, he says he’s ready. And he flips MJF off while he’s at it.
But then Wardlow says he wants to do the next one!? Wardlow takes off his jacket and takes up the belt. MJF says this is fine, and hands Wardlow the belt. Wardlow gives Cody the ninth and hardest lash yet! MJF stands over Cody as he crawls on the mat. But Cody fires up because he’s at the threshold! Except, his body is giving out. Brandi is here! And she’s not Nightmare Collective Brandi, either. Mrs. Cody Rhodes goes to the ringside to tell Cody he’s almost there. Just one more and then he can take it all out on Wardlow and MJF the next few weeks. Fans are thunderous as Cody stands back up! MJF SMACKS Cody in the front this time! The tenth lash was given but MJF is the one upset because Cody didn’t give in. So he low block kicks Cody before running away!
Fans boo the cowardly Maxwell Jacob Friedman and his muscle as more AEW stars rush out. But now MJF has to face the consequences at Revolution! Will Cody use all of this as fuel for the fire when he burns MJF down?
My Thoughts:
A really, really good episode for Dynamite! Things are shaping up for AEW Revolution, and I really liked the literal “eye for an eye” element to Moxley’s story with the Inner Circle. I also liked Jericho’s use of Heel hypocrisy, too. That was a classic move. We get a great 2v2 tag match from SCU and Best Friends, and Orange Cassidy continues to be a gem. The Dark Order’s “commercial” was pretty good, a much better promo than the leaked-not-leaked meeting footage with the Exalted One. I can’t wait to see who it is playing that part.
The 8 Man Tag tonight was incredible, and it did an amazing job moving the Hangman story along. I really hope that Hangman-Omega retains against SCU so that the Young Bucks can win the battle royal to set up Elite VS Elite at Revolution. Also the magically appearing pitcher was a great way to immediately diffuse the shot about Hangman drinking too much.
Britt Baker is evil now after “knocking teeth” out of Yuka’s mouth like that. But her losing the match was a good way to keep her off to the side of the title scene for right now. Pac using Riho as a means to get his tiebreaker with Omega was a special kind of sinister, and it does help set up Nyla’s title shot. I can’t be sure how the women’s title match goes, and that’s pretty great. If Nyla wins, I’m not sure what Face steps up to challenge her given other stories going on in the Women’s Division. To that, I don’t know how to consider Brandi being her normal self tonight. The Nightmare Collective still needs her for their story, but I guess it could be said the pain of her husband snapped her out of whatever that all is, for a time.
Throwing in the Superbad VS Bad Boy tonight was alright. It was a good match but I’m sure this is just the start. Because anything short of an unsanctioned match like what Janela had with Omega or Moxley is not enough. And the lashing, that was some strong stuff. Everyone involved did great, but especially Cody, for obvious reasons. MJF was also great in his role, he is the Heel that we get to love hating on. All this just adds so much to the story between Cody and MJF, that’s going to be a show-stealer at Revolution.
My Score: 9.2/10
