Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Buy In
- It’s great to see fans in attendance. This is going to feel like a legitimate pay-per-view for the first time in a year!
- I like the idea, but I’m not loving the slot machines behind the commentary team as far as the actual look of it. It’s not like that really matters, though, and I’m glad they tried to do something different.
- Every time Riho comes out, I always forget how tiny she really is. Funny enough, Serena Deeb doesn’t look that much bigger in comparison.
- Deeb is playing heel, straight-up. That’s surprising. Not that I would have imagined Riho being the heel, mind you—I just assumed this would be face/face.
- I’m really digging the vibe of the venue. Daily’s Place being outside and with a different layout just has this cool, interesting flow to it, it seems. Lots of other arenas have a similar aesthetic and just blend in together, but this feels like a special summer event. Very cool!
- Very good match to kick things off!
Adam Page vs. Brian Cage
- The crowd is going NUTS for Hangman! I love to see that.
- Nice moonsault from Page.
- And again, I’m loving this crowd. They’re eating everything up and clearly very starved for this, so it’s translating as pure passion and fandom.
- Cage didn’t want Team Taz ringside and they’re keeping that story going here. He lost in part because of Ricky Starks and Hook. Glad to see Page win, as he was definitely the right man to come out on top. Good match!
AEW World Tag Team Championship Match
- “To hell with that decaf” – Jim Ross about Tony Schiavone being super pumped at the idea of Kingston and Moxley shoving streamers in the mouths of The Young Bucks. That made me chuckle.
- “Matt Jackson decides to start thrusting for some reason” isn’t a phrase I expected to type out for this match.
- One thing I love about AEW is that they allow people to do piledrivers. Obviously, I’m aware how dangerous they can be and I want people to be safe, but suicide dives and all sorts of other moves that are allowed in WWE are dangerous, too. Piledrivers should be allowed again in the ‘E just like how they’re fine in AEW.
- Frankie Kazarian attacking The Good Brothers feels a bit odd since we know Christopher Daniels can’t balance out the team. I’m curious where they’ll go with that.
- Meltzer Driver on the ramp. Simple, but effective.
- Mox is bleeding soooo much. This isn’t even a hardcore match and he’s redder than that exploding barbed wire match, if I remember correctly.
- Roman Reigns taunt, eh? I can’t help but to smirk at that, at least.
- I like that Kingston got the hot tag, rather than Moxley. Kingston’s the lesser name of the two, naturally, so it would have been natural for the reverse to happen, but it means so much more for Eddie in comparison.
- “He’s sunk in deeper than an Alabama tick!” – Don Callis about the sharpshooter.
- After a series of superkicks, Moxley kicking out at a 1-count was shocking. Great moment.
- Four BTE Triggers and Moxley’s the one who takes the pin. I’m surprised it wasn’t Kingston, to be honest. That’s not a criticism, by the way, at all. This was another good match to keep the ball rolling.
Serpentico is replacing The Blade and Aaron Solow is replacing QT Marshall in the Casino Battle Royale.
Casino Battle Royale
- Starting off with the Clubs suit, including Christian Cage, Matt Sydal, Powerhouse Hobbs, Dustin Rhodes, and Max Caster. Makes sense for Caster to start things so he can rap. This guy has won me over so much. He’s really on track to be a world champion in the future.
- Sydal is out via Caster.
- Caster is out via Cage. I’m not entirely sold that that was supposed to happen the way it did with him falling awkwardly on the ramp and such.
- Next up is the Diamonds: Isiah Kassidy, Matt Hardy, 10, Nick Comoroto, and Serpentico.
- Serpentico is already gone.
- Comoroto and 10 are gone. Rhodes is out, too.
- Time for the Hearts to enter. Varsity Blonds, Colt Cabana, Anthony Bowens and Penta El Zero Miedo. The crowd popped big for Penta, who is dressed like Joker, despite not drawing that card.
- Adios Cabana. And Bowens.
- Final suit is up. The Spades are Jungle Boy (who gets a big pop), Marq Quen, Aaron Solow, Evil Uno and Lee Johnson.
- Brian Pillman Jr is gone. I don’t remember Griff Garrison getting taken out but I don’t see him anymore. Christian is just hanging out on the floor outside the ring for this whole match, practically, but I can’t spot Garrison, so he must have been eliminated.
- Solow and Johnson were taken out by Hardy.
- Penta takes out Evil Uno and then gets taken out by Jungle Boy.
- Currently still involved are the mystery man, Jungle Boy, Hobbs, Cage, Private Party and Hardy.
- Never mind about Hobbs, who was taken out mid-typing that sentence.
- Joker card entrant is Lio Rush. The crowd’s into it and not disappointed, which is great to see.
- Rush got eliminated by Private Party and Hardy! I didn’t think that would happen without at least one of those three going. Very surprising.
- Jungle Boy and Christian take care of Quen and Kassidy.
- We’re down to Jungle Boy, Christian Cage and Matt Hardy, until Hardy is double-crossed by Cage and eliminated.
- Great call to have these two as the finalists. Those are the two that I figured had the best chances to win and now, you have a babyface winning and the fans happy no matter who comes out on top. It seems there might be more support for Jungle Boy based on the crowd singing his theme. Then again, Tarzan Boy is a great song, so maybe it’s just that.
- Great spot with Jungle Boy swinging around the turnbuckle!! And with that, Jungle Boy wins!
- Super fun match!
Anthony Ogogo vs. Cody Rhodes
- Cool ring gear for Rhodes.
- After so many great matches, it seems fitting we’d hit a wall. This match isn’t doing much for me.
- Yeaaaaaah…this is just not good. It’s not infamously horrible, but it’s just bland as all hell.
- And like that, it’s over. I can’t help but to feel like I’ll be thinking by the end of the night that I would have rather not had this on the card and saved that time.
TNT Championship Match
- Turn things around back to fun, guys! Let’s go!
- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Miro throwing the bag that’s supposed to have the snake in it made me crack up! Obviously, there isn’t a real snake in there and this isn’t animal cruelty, so relax. That was just a funny moment.
- Lance Archer passes out, rather than tapping. Aubrey Edwards calls for the bell and that’s it. This match fell short, too.
AEW Women’s World Championship Match
- I’m really hoping these two put on a special show here. Not only has the energy level dropped, but if this doesn’t match the other women’s match, that will be weird to say the NWA title match was better, wouldn’t it be?
- Overall, I’m enjoying this more than the previous two matches, but I’m not gaga over it like the first four matches. Still, it’s early enough it can keep getting better.
- Is Baker loopy? Something feels off.
- This is sloppy. I’m legitimately getting concerned that this is another situation where Baker has some form of concussion like we’ve seen before.
- I’m surprised about the near-falls. They got me on each of these so far (I count 4).
- Glad to see Baker win, but this match was kind of a mess.
Sting and Darby Allin vs. Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page
- It’s crazy Sting is as old as he is, yet in as relatively good shape. He’s truly one of the most special wrestlers in history to be able to have this type of career.
- OUCH! Ethan Page’s toss of Darby Allin into the crowd seemed like a rough fall for all parties involved. Well, not for Page. He just launched him and got to watch it happen.
- Admittedly, I wasn’t big on this match heading into this, nor do I think it was the best match of the night. However, this did what it needed to do. Darby Allin got tossed into the crowd and Sting proved that he’s somehow still able to get around that ring. That’s what people wanted to see, so this was a success, for sure.
AEW World Championship Three-Way Match
- Let’s goooo. I’m excited for this.
- Kenny Omega has arguably the best entrance announcements in the business today. At least, I can’t think of anyone who can match or top it. Even the North Carolina shtick makes me chuckle.
- PAC does such a clean 450 splash. He’s a strange anomaly for being so muscular and agile at the same time.
- Cassidy blocking Omega’s suplex attempt by putting his hands in his pockets is great. OC has perpetually been one of my favorites in AEW, if not my overall top guy. He’s so good.
- Cassidy’s near-fall after PAC slammed Omega off the turnbuckle had the crowd SO ready for a title change. That’s great to see.
- “Fuck you, Don!” from the crowd.
- Man, every time Cassidy gets a big move like the Orange Punch, these fans go nuts. This is so good.
- Aubrey Edwards to the rescue to count the…pin from Omega. I love it.
Mark Henry is announced as a new signing to join the broadcast team as an analyst and coach!
Stadium Stampede Match
- The Inner Circle made quite the entrance rappelling into the stadium.
- So the downside to a match like this is that they’ve been focusing entirely on Chris Jericho and MJF for quite a while, meaning the rest of the action isn’t as important. Of course, these are the two leaders, but so we know that’s why they’re focused on them, but kayfabe, it could have actually ended and nobody would know since we’re not looking at the ring at all. Not even cutting back after like 5 minutes.
- On the other side of things, it’s fun to watch Jericho and MJF brawl, so I’m sure nobody is bitching about not tracking what Ortiz and Harwood are doing, for instance.
- Fun touch that Wardlow grabbed an icicle in the walk-in freezer and tried to stab Jake Hager. That’s something new.
- This shot of Shawn Spears in a room absolutely filled with hundreds of chairs is so over the top, but I loved it.
- Cool moment of Sammy Guevara running up and flipping off a wall.
- DJ Konnan sets the atmosphere for FTR and Proud-N-Powerful to brawl in the club.
- Staplers to the head, beer bottles being thrown at each other. Thumbs up.
- Hitting a lull here where it feels like nothing all that fun is happening, but it’s dragging on.
- Eventually, Sammy pins Spears in the ring to win for The Inner Circle.
