Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff / Axiom vs. Nathan Frazer

  • Nothing going on for the kickoff outside of breaking down the card. That’s usual, though. But by that, I mean there aren’t any changes to the card being announced or anything of that sort.
  • Axiom defeated Frazer by pinfall. Good match. Nothing too memorable or must-see, but they know how to do flippy stuff and, well, they did that. Thumbs up.

Shawn Michaels starts off the show. He heads to the ring and hypes everyone up with a trademark DX “Are you ready?” only for CM Punk to interrupt. They share a few pleasantries and The Heartbreak Kid teases him about how Punk is wearing a Bret Hart hoodie. Punk reminds everyone he hasn’t made a decision about which brand to sign to, takes a selfie with HBK, and his music oddly starts, as if to be told that he’s out of time.

NXT North American Championship Match: Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. Dragon Lee

  • Rey Mysterio is ringside for commentary during this match.
  • No Judgment Day members out with Dom. Maybe they’ll pop up later to interfere.
  • Lee had a rough landing from a stomp to the outside, with his knee landing on the apron. It seems like he narrowly avoided an injury there.
  • Oh hey, we have a new champion, as Lee scores a pinfall. Honestly, it feels a little underwhelming for this to just be the random way Dom’s title reign ends. However, they were going with Wes Lee, so it seems like they had to just pivot and they want to move on. I wonder if they’re going to address this much on Raw with the other Judgment Day members, or if they’ll try to just bypass it.

Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge: Blair Davenport vs. Fallon Henley vs. Kelani Jordan vs. Lash Legend vs. Tiffany Stratton

  • It’s been clarified that the winner will get their title match at NXT New Year’s Evil.
  • Fallon Henley is starting things off against Blair Davenport.
  • No decisions yet as Tiffany Stratton is the next to enter the fray.
  • Tiff and Blair keep double-teaming Fallon. Eventually, that breaks down with Stratton kicking Davenport.
  • Stratton just had one of the better cartwheel attacks into the corner that I’ve ever seen. Nice job.
  • Davenport steals a pin over Henley from Stratton. 1 point for Blair.
  • Fourth up for the match is Kelani Jordan.
  • Henley scores a point over Tiffany.
  • Lash Legend enters the match. She quickly tosses people around with some displays of power: a double-powerbomb and a double vertical suplex.
  • Legend stacks Fallon and Tiffany on top of each other and gets a pinfall, which they’re counting as 2 points.
  • Meta-Four’s Noam Dar and Oro Mensah come out to block Henley and Stratton from escaping once their 90 seconds are up. Henley climbed up to the top and Stratton pushed her off, with Henley falling onto the commentary table. Stratton then dove off the top onto Dar, Mensah and Davenport.
  • Davenport scored a second fall (over Jordan) as the fans start chanting “this is awesome.”
  • Stratton pins Legend for a point.
  • Davenport scores a third point, pinning Fallon.
  • Final tally = Blair (3), Fallon (1), Kelani (0), Lash (2), Tiffany (1)
  • Davenport is your winner. She cuts a generic “I’m gonna see [Lyra Valkyria] at New Year’s Evil”. Valkyria comes out and poses with the title, only to get blasted from behind by a returning Cora Jade.

Carmelo Hayes vs. Lexis King

  • Nothing that happened in this match stood out to me to mention. They simply wrestled a series of maneuvers against each other and that’s about it.
  • The closest thing to a talking point is that King wanted to shake hands twice and Hayes refused to.
  • After the match, King got a microphone, said it was a hell of a match, and that he didn’t attack Trick Williams, “but thank you for that PLE spotlight, my friend.”

Men’s Iron Survivor Challenge: Bron Breakker vs. Dijak vs. Trick Williams vs. Josh Briggs vs. Tyler Bate

  • Dijak and Josh Briggs start things off.
  • Just as Tyler Bate is about to enter, Dijak pins Briggs for 1 point.
  • Briggs pinned Dijak for 1 point.
  • Bate pins Dijak for 1 point. He also falls backward and on top of Briggs, and should have gotten another pin, but the referee took too long to start counting it.
  • Trick Williams is out next.
  • Bate pinned Trick for a point.
  • Breakker is finally out and immediately scores 3 pins from spears on Briggs, Bate and Dijak.
  • Trick jumps from the top rope onto all 4 of his opponents to the outside.
  • Dijak pinned Trick for a point.
  • Bate evens the score with a third pin, this time over Dijak.
  • Briggs and Dijak did a double moonsault (simultaneously, not together) and scored pins over Breakker and Williams.
  • Dijak and Briggs big booted each other after Bate ducked. Funny little moment.
  • Breakker speared Trick through the security barricade.
  • Dijak chokeslammed Breakker through the commentary table.
  • Trick gets a pin on Briggs.
  • Feast Your Eyes almost gets a pin for Dijak on Trick, but Eddy Thorpe interfered and pulled the referee away. Thorpe attacked Dijak and Trick capitalized for a pin.
  • Trick just pinned Bate right after that, too, for his third point.
  • Breakker gets pinned by Trick with just a few seconds to spare, and Trick wins with 4 points!
  • Final tally = Bate (3), Breakker (3), Briggs (2), Dijak (3), Williams (4)
  • Much better match than the women’s. Thumbs up for sure.

Backstage, Meta-Four got into an argument and eventual brawl with Josh Briggs, Brooks Jensen and Fallon Henley.

Steel Cage Match: Kiana James vs. Roxanne Perez

  • Pinfall or submission, only. No escaping the cage finish available.
  • Roxanne landed awkwardly when Kiana powerbombed her from I think the second rope (the angle was odd). It looked like James over-rotated Perez. I’m surprised Roxanne doesn’t have a concussion.
  • Izzi Dame interferes to slam the door shut on Roxanne. James hits her Deal Breaker with a chair and gets the win.
  • This was another sloppy match, which has been a theme for tonight, in a lot of ways. Dame’s interference got zero reaction from the crowd. I guess she’s filling in the spot of Giovanna Eburneo as Kiana’s lackey. Overall, what a meh.

The participants of the men’s NXT Breakout Tournament get a spotlight video package.

NXT Championship Match: Ilja Dragunov (c) vs. Baron Corbin

  • Not too much going on here.
  • Corbin’s in control the majority of the match. They just keep telling the story of “Dragunov takes punishment and won’t stay down.” It’s all in all kind of boring in my book.
  • Dragunov kicks out of a Deep Six, for instance.
  • It took 3 attempts, but Dragunov was able to do a Jackknife powerbomb on Corbin. We don’t see many of that style powerbomb all too often.
  • He follows it up with a Coast to Coast.
  • Dragunov eventually hits Torpedo Moscow for the win. Overall, a rather blah match for my tastes.
  • Trick Williams comes out to signify he’s coming for the title and Carmelo Hayes is right behind him, eyeing him up. That’s the end of the show.
