Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Pre-Show
- “Of course, the beautiful McKenzie Mitchell” says Vic Joseph and Beth Phoenix makes a little “ooooh” at the camera. That made me chuckle. For those who don’t know, Vic and McKenzie have been in a relationship for a while, so this isn’t anything new, but it’s just a cheeky little bit of fun.
- I love Ridge Holland’s entrance theme.
- This was about as much of a squash as I had anticipated. There’s 7 minutes left before the event starts and Holland’s already got the pin.
- Holland calls out Timothy Thatcher to set up a future match between the two. That should be fun.
Million Dollar Championship Match
- Cameron Grimes is decked out with some Million Dollar Man type gear. Pretty sweet.
- I’m on the fence about whether or not it’s a good idea this went first. On the one hand, you can build up more and more throughout the night and this is the one that arguably matters the last. Then again, if the other matches are more intense, this could have been a good sacrificial lamb to go as a buffer between two other ones. We’ll see if another match falls victim to that.
- I wonder if LA Knight was a Hulk Hogan fan as a kid, based on that gear.
- Grimes has some sort of cut seemingly above his nose. Not a bad one, but something must have clipped him.
- I’m cool with Grimes using the Million Dollar Dream as one of his finishers going forward. How about you?
- DiBiase gets to clock LA Knight with a punch and lock him in the Million Dollar Dream, too!
- We’ve got a new champion. I fully expect him to give the title back to DiBiase on the next tapings and say he’s earned DiBiase’s respect, but the title belongs to him.
NXT Women’s Championship Match
- Despite the size difference, Dakota Kai’s putting up a big fight. She’s the more experienced of the two and she has more of a vicious side to her, one can argue.
- This has been more of an even fight than I expected, I’ll be honest. I still think Gonzalez has the win in the bag, though.
- Not too much to say. It’s been good, but nothing memorable going on.
- Gonzalez scores the win and retains the title.
- While Gonzalez was posing with the title, Kay Lee Ray randomly shows up after the match to basically announce her presence and, most likely, indicate that she’s looking to put herself in title contention. After holding the NXT UK Women’s Championship for as long as she did, she should be an easy No. 1 contender.
NXT UK Championship Match
- Any time they have the heartbeat tone in preparation for a match, I dig it.
- Let’s goooooo. These two beat the tar out of each other last time. I’m hoping for a safe, but brutal clash.
- WALTER’s offense is so basic, but it works so well. Those slaps and chops are always loud as hell and must sting like a son of a bitch.
- Powerbombs on the apron can’t feel good, either. Ouch.
- Dragunov’s cut on his head has opened up, as anticipated.
- Despite how I like Dragunov, I’m finding myself getting nervous that he’ll win (as I’m predicting) every time he starts fighting back. That definitely means I’d prefer WALTER retaining the title.
- For curiosity’s sake, WWE should get WALTER to try out one of those punching machines, but to chop it instead. Let’s see how powerful and how much force he has in those chops.
- Dragunov’s body already has purple and red welts all over it. Yikes.
- After Dragunov misses the Torpedo Moscow, WALTER locks him in, flips him back and eats a Torpedo Moscow anyway, but Dragunov can’t capitalize. This crowd’s eating it up and chanting “holy shit” and “NXT” (much easier chant than “NXT UK”, isn’t it?)
- Now, there’s a “fight forever” chant.
- Dropkick from WALTER!? And even stacking up Dragunov, WALTER still doesn’t get the win yet.
- Jeeezzzuuuss the slaps. Another knee to the face, another powerbomb and another 300 lb splash off the turnbuckle and Dragunov STILL kicks out.
- I want to see footage of the backstage while this match is going on and their reactions.
- By submission of all things, Dragunov wins!! Hell of a match!
Ted DiBiase and Cameron Grimes are interviewed by McKenzie Mitchell. Tuesday night, there’s going to be a Million Dollar Celebration.
William Regal tells Samoa Joe that he has to remain unbiased in his match against Karrion Kross. Still, he wants Joe to kick his ass.
2-Out-of-3 Falls Match
- I really hope this isn’t Adam Cole’s last match in WWE.
- After a few minutes of some back-and-forth action, O’Reilly scores the first fall by catching Cole’s legs and reversing a Panama Sunrise into a pin. Time for the Street Fight element of this match to begin.
- I hate how kendo sticks have become the go-to weapon for the past decade. No doubt, they hurt like hell, but it’s just stupid that they’re under the ring to begin with and it always looks ridiculous from an outsider’s perspective who isn’t willing to suspend their disbelief.
- Nice touch with O’Reilly not being able to run the ropes because his side hurts too much, rather than just ignoring that detail.
- One kick. Two kick. Double pump kick. That was fun.
- Owwwwwwwwwww Cole tossing O’Reilly into the two chairs so his back hits the top of them. Nope.
- That’s it for the second fall as Cole gets a pin to even the score.
- And now that the steel cage is coming into play, we’re getting the heartbeat tone again. Yay!
- Loooooooooove that O’Reilly gets the win in the steel cage with a heel hook despite being handcuffed! That was an ending I didn’t see coming!
McKenzie Mitchell interviews Ilja Dragunov, who says The Ring General has fallen. Long live The Czar.
Legado del Fantasma speaks about how there is no one better than they are. This Tuesday, they’re going to finish the job with Hit Row. He who laughs last laughs best. There will be a six-man tag team match between the factions, along with the finals of the NXT Breakout Tournament (Odyssey Jones against Carmelo Hayes).
NXT Championship Match
- Standard affair so far. I’m a little disappointed, if I’m being honest. Maybe this shouldn’t have followed Cole vs. O’Reilly.
- “By the hair of his toe” Kross reaches the ropes. Sure. That’s a phrase.
- Based on their size alone, these two definitely look like they make sense as the two fighting for the main event title.
- A Muscle Buster for the win! Okay! We’ve got a new champion and he’s back to using that finisher, which is great.
