Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:

Kickoff

  • This will be a two-hour long pre-show. Given the way the previous events have gone down, I highly doubt there will be any talking points. I’m expecting a panel to break down the matches and give their excitement and hype, but nothing else. Nevertheless, if there are any announcements or interesting happenstances, I’ll mention them here. Otherwise, I’ll see you at 8 p.m. for the actual start of WrestleMania!
  • Outside of some celebrities hogging the mic to say not much of any value, that was your pre-show. No announcements or changes to the card. Enjoy the show!! Let’s get things started!

Becky G is singing America the Beautiful.

Kevin Hart is your intro host for the cold open.

The Miz and Snoop Dogg are opening WrestleMania in the ring for a promo. No opening pyro, strangely.

United States Championship Match: Austin Theory (c) vs. John Cena

  • John Cena’s entrance is with a handful of Make-A-Wish kids. Not only is that very neat for them, it’s also likely a surefire guarantee now that Theory is dropping that belt. It’d be pretty odd for Cena to come up short to open Mania with those kids watching, wouldn’t it?
  • Cena’s having as good of a match as he used to, instead of a quick thing like we’ve seen a handful of times here and there. Awesome.
  • Referee Chad Patton is knocked down. Theory is tapping out, naturally, and hits Cena with a low-blow and an A-Town Down to retain the title.

Titus O’Neil is joining the commentary team for the Men’s WrestleMania Showcase match. As a WWE Global Ambassador, he is, and I quote, “global ambassading all day.”

Men’s WrestleMania Showcase Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match: Alpha Academy vs. Braun Strowman and Ricochet vs. The Street Profits vs. The Viking Raiders

  • Chad Gable and Ricochet start it off and immediately showcase how good they are, even just by doing maneuvers in a way that avoids being too close to the corners so others can’t tag in. Both are underrated.
  • Gable’s able to do a rolling German suplex on Braun Strowman! Nice!
  • Jeeeeez. Great spot with Otis and Ivar holding up Gable and Erik, holding up Montez, for Ricochet to jump onto him for everyone to crash down. Very cool.
  • Strowman’s train around the ring is in locomotion, you could say. Until Angelo Dawkins tackled him to put a stop to that. And then, Ricochet effortlessly doing a Shooting Star Press to the outside. The energy is great in this match!
  • Ricochet takes the pin from Dawkins a moment later after Dawk had his knees up and Tez followed it up with a frog splash to Ricochet.
  • For a match with no build or purpose, this was great.

Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins

  • Logan Paul’s entrance is a zip line. A very slow one. But still kind of neat. He has a Prime energy drink mascot person with him that will surely get laid out by Rollins, right?
  • Rollins has a conductor for his intro. It would have been better, in my opinion, if they didn’t pipe in the chants for that.
  • In typical fashion, Rollins is dressed absolutely ridiculously. He looks like he’s gift-wrapped with red on top of his pink harness and chaps. Strange.
  • Did Paul injure his right pinky? It sure seems like it.
  • It turns out KSI is in the Prime drink costume. RIP Spanish Announce Table as Rollins pulls KSI on the table and Logan Paul jumps on top of him by accident. Ha!
  • Rollins keeps kicking out of some moves that feel like potential match-finishers, like a frog splash. They’re doing a great job.
  • Rollins gets the win with a stomp. Awesome.

Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Becky Lynch, Lita and Trish Stratus vs. Damage CTRL (Bayley, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky)

  • The babyfaces have a black and white cinematic intro. Not my favorite, but better than nothing. Their ring gear doesn’t match in the slightest bit as Trish looks like a hot gangster in neutral colors, Lita looks like a NASCAR flag in red and Becky is predominantly orange. Too much to coordinate that, I guess.
  • The energy from the crowd is definitely not the same as the previous two matches, that’s for sure.
  • Lita’s in this match much longer than I had anticipated.
  • Becky and Lita help Trish flip over for a hurricanrana, tossing Dakota into Bayley and Iyo on the outside. All things considered, that was a good spot and a highlight so far.
  • Once we reach the flurry of finishers portion of the match, it all ends with Becky landing a Manhandle Slam from the second rope on Bayley for the pin.

Dominik Mysterio vs. Rey Mysterio

  • Dominik’s entrance is great. Footage of him in prison (ha), being taken out in a correctional van, and with some great gear and a Rey-inspired mask. Awesome.
  • Rey is out with Snoop Dogg driving his own car (a low rider that doesn’t seem to have the suspension going on) and Eddie Guerrero’s theme that transitions into Rey’s music.
  • There’s a giant Cinnamon Toast Crunch mascot ringside, too! I wonder if that’s also KSI hahaha.
  • This crowd is RED HOT for Rey whipping Dom with his belt.
  • Dom throws Aalyah’s water into her face for some heat. Fantastic.
  • Later in the match, Angie gets to slap Dom for talking back to her.
  • Finn Balor and Damian Priest are now ringside.
  • Legado del Fantasma is out to even the odds (complete with their LWO shirts on).
  • Dom hits a 6-1-9 onto Rey, followed up with a frog splash, but it’s just a two-count.
  • Dominik has exposed a turnbuckle and then, while the referee’s distracted, Dom has brought out a chain. But Bad Bunny grabs the chain from him! Rey with the 6-1-9 and a frog splash for the win! Great segment.

SmackDown Women’s Championship Match: Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Rhea Ripley

  • I’m so glad the tag team match is going to be the main event instead of this.
  • No real special entrances for either of them. That’s a shame.
  • Rather flat so far, considering how both are capable of much better.
  • Great DDT from Flair onto Ripley.
  • Another good spot with Ripley flipping Flair off the turnbuckle.
  • Flair landed face-first a little later from a German suplex type flip backward. Ouch.
  • Ripley wins with a Riptide from the top rope! Woooo! Damn good match.
  • Flair is smiling and clapping for Rhea ringside.

The Miz and Snoop Dog announce the attendance record. Snoop says The Miz should have a match, and The Miz talks himself up. But out comes Pat McAfee! Michael Cole is losing his mind. McAfee wants a match, which The Miz refuses, saying he can’t make it official. But Snoop Dogg claims he can, and we have a ref, so we have a match!

Pat McAfee vs. The Miz

  • George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers, ringside, was pushed by The Miz, hopped the barricade and took Miz down.
  • McAfee gets the win with a punt.

WWE Tag Team Championship Match: The Usos vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

  • Lil Uzi Vert is out to rap for a minute at the start of The Usos’ entrance.
  • Big pop, naturally, for Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Admittedly, it didn’t sound quite as big as I had anticipated. That might be the acoustics, though.
  • What’s up with this crowd? Sami Zayn is kicking out at 2.75 and they’ve got no energy to pop. C’mon!
  • Okay. They popped for the kickout on the 1D.
  • Jey hits a Helluva Kick on Sami to balance out Sami doing a splash earlier. Sami hits an exploder to get a chance to tag Owens back in. Zayn with the Helluva. Owens with the Stunner. Jey kicks out.
  • The Usos both land a splash on Owens, but he kicks out!
  • Sami hits a Helluva Kick on Jey. This might be it. He follows it up with a second Helluva Kick. Owens makes the save to hit a Stunner on Jimmy. Sami hits a third Helluva Kick!
  • And we have our new tag team champions!!!!
