The Money In The Bank ladder match was originally conceived by Chris Jericho and has been an annual event in WWE since its debut in 2005. In total, there have been 28 holders of the briefcase, with 2 of them doing so outside of the traditional ladder match.

Edge (2005)

The original Money In The Bank ladder match briefcase was meant to give a Raw superstar an opportunity at Batista’s World Heavyweight Championship. However, the draft saw Batista drafted to SmackDown, while WWE Champion John Cena moved to Raw. Edge won the match at WrestleMania by hitting Chris Benoit in the back with a steel chair as he reached for the case. It was established that the winner could cash in any time within one year, and Edge became the first man to defend his briefcase in a match against Matt Hardy.
A whole nine months later, Edge shocked the world by cashing in immediately after John Cena defended his title in an Elimination Chamber match. Two spears later, Edge made history as the first to successfully cash in Money In The Bank.

Rob Van Dam (2006)
Defeated: Bobby Lashley, Finlay, Matt Hardy, Ric Flair, and Shelton Benjamin
While holding the briefcase and using the nickname “Mr. Money In The Bank”, RVD defeated Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental title in a title vs. case match. He became the first man to announce his intention to cash in ahead of time, with John Cena again being the target. This time however, Cena was given plenty of time to prepare, as Rob Van Dam told him their match would take place at ECW One Night Stand 2006. The Whole F’n Show was unable to wrestle at the previous ECW PPV due to injury, so it was his time to shine on home turf.
Walking in to hostile territory, Cena was up against it as the ECW faithful adamantly supported their man. In the end, the first MITB winner assisted RVD in his victory as he speared Cena through a table near the end of the match. The fans chanted “Thank You Edge” after taking off a motorcycle helmet to reveal his face. RVD won the WWE title and was awarded the ECW title two days later, but his time at the top came crumbling down after being pulled over on the road by police and charged for drug possession. He was made to lose both titles in the same week, along with serving a 30-day suspension.

Mr. Kennedy (2007)
Defeated: CM Punk, Edge, Finlay, Jeff Hardy, King Booker, Matt Hardy, and Randy Orton
To date, this was the biggest Money In The Bank match so far with eight competitors. Mr. Kennedy had enjoyed a generous amount of success since debuting in 2005, but this was by far the biggest victory of his WWE career. With a 100% success rate thus far, it felt like a foregone conclusion that Kennedy would become a champion. However, he tore his triceps and WWE had to make other plans, although it turned out the injury wasn’t as serious as first thought.
Kennedy’s career floundered after this, as he was relegated to the mid-card and released by WWE in 2009. According to Kennedy, his release came about because Orton complained about his “reckless” work to John Cena and encouraged him to take their worries to Vince McMahon. In 2010, he signed with TNA Wrestling and became a two-time TNA World Champion under the new name “Mr. Anderson”.

Edge (2007)

WWE changed their plans by having Edge challenge the injured Mr. Kennedy. The sneaky manner in the way he won and used the case contributed to his new nickname “The Ultimate Opportunist”.
There was nothing more opportunistic than the way Edge cashed in on The Undertaker on an episode of SmackDown, as he speared the champion after fighting to a grueling draw with Batista in a steel cage (Taker was also attacked by Mark Henry). For the first time in history the cash in happened on a show other than a PPV, and it was the first for the World Heavyweight Championship. For a long time, it stood as the record for the quickest cash in ever.

CM Punk (2008)

What is it about Edge? He was involved in the decision again, only this time on the losing end for the first time. After Batista attacked Edge during a promo, CM Punk made his first night as a Raw Superstar memorable by cashing in the briefcase. While he had won the ECW title before, this was his first major title on one of the two main brands, setting himself up for a storied WWE career after doing all he could for the revived ECW. It was also the first time a cash in happened on an episode of Monday Night Raw.

CM Punk (2009)

CM Punk made history by becoming the only man to win twice in a MITB ladder match, but also being the only man to win it back-to-back. This record still stands and is unlikely to be emulated soon.
And guess what? Edge was involved again, as this time it was Punk cashing in on Jeff Hardy after defeating him for the title in a ladder match at Extreme Rules. It was the first time the cash in had happened on PPV in three years, and it solidified Punk as a main event player on SmackDown.

Jack Swagger (2010)
Defeated: Christian, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Evan Bourne, Kane, Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy, Montel Vontavious Porter, and Shelton Benjamin
This remains the biggest Money In The Bank ladder match in WWE history, as it sported 10 competitors from Raw & SmackDown. Aside from Mr. Kennedy, some of the previous winners were well-received because they made sense, but the decision to have Jack Swagger win the case turned a few heads. Many fans didn’t feel he was ready to be a World Champion, but WWE had other ideas, as he cashed in two days later on an unsuspecting and injured Chris Jericho; who had just been attacked by Edge.
It marks the sixth (& last) time in a row that Edge would be involved in some way. Also, it marked the last time WWE had a single briefcase, as the company introduced the Money In The Bank PPV with brand specific matches. 2010 is the only year to see three different winners, and the only time to feature three MITB matches ladder matches before 2017.

Kane (2010)
Defeated: Big Show, Christian, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Drew McIntyre, Kofi Kingston, and Matt Hardy
Kane still holds the record for the quickest cash in ever, after defeating Rey Mysterio with a Tombstone Piledriver on the same show that he won it. After claiming the first SmackDown MITB case in the ladder match, Kane waited only 49 minutes to deliver his wrath, which came immediately after Mysterio defended the title against Jack Swagger. Not only that, but he holds the record for being the biggest superstar to win the Money In The Bank.

The Miz (2010)
Defeated: Chris Jericho, Edge, Evan Bourne, John Morrison, Mark Henry, Randy Orton, and Ted DiBiase
Unlike Jack Swagger and Kane, The Miz took his time and picked his moment more carefully. He held on to the first Raw MITB briefcase for months before finally seizing his opportunity.
On an episode of Raw, The Miz ran down to the ring after Randy Orton had successfully defended the WWE title against Wade Barrett and subsequently beaten down by The Nexus. It was the first time since 2006 that any superstar cashed in on the WWE Champion, and The Miz began a reign which he later admitted he wasn’t ready for. His biggest victory as WWE Champion was retaining the title against John Cena at WrestleMania XXVII, with a little help from The Rock.

Daniel Bryan (2011)
Defeated: Cody Rhodes, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, Kane, Sheamus, Sin Cara, and Wade Barrett
Before the Yes Movement, Daniel Bryan made a name for himself on SmackDown against giants like Big Show & Mark Henry. On the way to his actual victory, Bryan cashed in on Mark Henry and won the title, but the decision was nullified because Henry was knocked out and wasn’t medically cleared to compete. Bryan waited til the TLC PPV and cashed in on Big Show after he defeated Mark Henry for the title. The former champion helped matters by attacking Show with a steel chair. It was a very popular win.

Alberto Del Rio (2011)
Defeated: Alex Riley, Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, R-Truth, and The Miz
Amid a rivalry between CM Punk and John Cena, Alberto Del Rio got in the mix and made things difficult for both of ’em. Due to a dispute between who was the real WWE Champion, Punk & Cena fought to become the undisputed WWE Champion at SummerSlam.
Immediately after Punk defeated Cena, the WWE Universe went from joy to despair, as Alberto Del Rio ran out with the briefcase and claimed the undisputed title. The fans would have to wait a few more months til CM Punk began his record 2nd reign, courtesy of Del Rio sticking his nose in.

Dolph Ziggler (2012)
Defeated: Christian, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, Santino Marella, Sin Cara, Tensai, and Tyson Kidd
Many fans felt Dolph Ziggler had been hard done by for a while, as he was often cited as an underrated WWE Superstar. He held Money In The Bank for a long time and defended it against the likes of Chris Jericho and John Cena. The brand extension had since been lifted, meaning that the WWE & World Champions could appear on either show, so while Ziggler held the SmackDown briefcase, his opportunity came on an episode of Raw.
After World Champion Alberto Del Rio lost a match to Jack Swagger & Zeb Colter, the attending fans erupted at the sound of Ziggler’s entrance music. The reaction is one of, if not the loudest in Money In The Bank history, as Ziggler frantically cashed in the case and ended Del Rio with the Zig-Zag. The fans couldn’t have been happier for Dolph, as he finally got the chance to prove he deserved to be a main event star in WWE. Words cannot describe the goosebumps that came over everyone that night, as Dolph Ziggler rushed to the ring to what remains the biggest moment of his career.

John Cena (2012)
Defeated: Big Show, Chris Jericho, Kane, and The Miz
John Cena became only the second man to announce his cashing in ahead of time, which came on the episode of Raw 1000 against reigning champion CM Punk. And while he won the match, it was by disqualification because of Big Show’s interference.
It marked the first time in history that a WWE Superstar cashed in and failed to become champion. Although he technically won the match, he didn’t become champion, which is pretty unfair, but I’m sure the Cena haters would’ve enjoyed it. He got many more opportunities, so this case felt like a waste… which is the first time we can say that.

Damien Sandow (2013)
Defeated: Antonio Cesaro, Cody Rhodes, Dean Ambrose, Fandango, Jack Swagger, and Wade Barrett
Damien Sandow brought back the concept of customizing the briefcase after Rob Van Dam back in 2006. While his gimmick implied he was hyperintelligent and full of class, his cashing in on World Champion John Cena during a promo was far from smart. You’d think he would wait for a surefire opportunity, but it completely backfired, and Damien Sandow was embarrassed by becoming the first man in history to lose after cashing in.
Two years in a row, one of the briefcases had been wasted and both matches involved John Cena. It could have been the biggest moment of his life, but the decision to give him Money In The Bank was a mistake. Sandow never recovered from this, so much so that he lost his gimmick, became too popular in a new gimmick with The Miz, got released, signed with Impact Wrestling, was later released by them, and now makes a living in Billy Corgan’s NWA promotion. Randy Orton (2013)
Defeated: Christian, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Rob Van Dam, and Sheamus
Daniel Bryan had just defeated John Cena for the WWE Championship and the fans went nuts, but Triple H, the special guest referee, didn’t like the idea and gave him a Pedigree. Randy Orton had been on the receiving end of Money In The Bank before, so it was his turn to be on the other side, only it was against someone the fans were really getting behind.
The reason for this was because WWE were looking to end the lineage of the Big Gold Belt representing the World Heavyweight Championship. With Randy Orton being the WWE Champion, and John Cena later becoming the World Champion, they went to TLC 2013 to square off in a unification match. In the process, Randy Orton defeated John Cena to become the undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion. For now, this put an end to brand exclusive contracts, as there was only one unified title to aim for, and it all began because of the outcomes of 2013’s Money In The Bank.

Seth Rollins (2014)
Defeated: Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger, and Rob Van Dam
One of the most memorable Money In The Bank wins came in the form of Seth Rollins claiming the new gold briefcase. He became the first to cash in mid-match, and as many will remember during the main event of WrestleMania, turned a singles encounter between Roman Reigns & Brock Lesnar in to a Triple Threat. It was a huge deal, and it later turned Seth Rollins heel as he betrayed The Shield and sided with The Authority.
What this win did was take Rollins away from a team player in The Shield, to being the company’s undisputed top guy sitting on top of the mountain holding the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. It had the desired effect of making Seth Rollins a truly loathed superstar on merit.

Sheamus (2015)
Defeated: Dolph Ziggler, Kane*, Kofi Kingston, Neville, Randy Orton, and Roman Reigns
This win came out of left field because Sheamus had been relegated to WWE’s mid-card for years. He was a former WWE Champion, but winning the case was the last thing anyone expected, but I was willing to give it a chance. During a time when Roman Reigns dominated the title while being chastised by the WWE Universe for his boring displays, they were looking for someone to step up.
When Sheamus cashed in and defeated Reigns for the title, again, the fans were befuddled, but at least WWE was giving someone else the opportunity to run with the ball. Again, everyone scratched their heads in disbelief when Sheamus lost the title back to Reigns 22 days later. What a grand waste of time, fella!

Dean Ambrose (2016)
Defeated: Alberto Del Rio, Cesaro, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn
At Money In The Bank 2016, the potential for the future looked bright. Many were hoping that the inventor of the match would win (this was his last opportunity), as Chris Jericho had yet to claim the briefcase. Other than that, the rest of the competitors looked like they could use it successfully.
Dean Ambrose rocked up and claimed the grand prize, and like Kane before him, he was impatient enough to cash in on the same night. Roman Reigns began the night as champion, but lost it to Seth Rollins in the main event. Ambrose nailed Rollins with Dirty Deeds to claim his only WWE Championship reign. This was the greatest moment in career til he left WWE and won the AEW Championship. The title was all about the former Shield members that night.
Shortly after, WWE renamed the title back to the “WWE Championship” and introduced the Universal Championship, essentially bringing back the brand extension with separate titles.

Baron Corbin (2017)
Defeated: AJ Styles, Dolph Ziggler, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Shinsuke Nakamura
2017 marked the only year where SmackDown got three Money In The Bank matches, while Raw got none. We saw the return of the blue briefcase for the men, which held a contract to challenge for the WWE Championship. Similar to other winners of the past, some fans questioned whether Baron Corbin was ready to become WWE Champion.
The company eventually realized he wasn’t, as he became the second man after Damien Sandow to lose his match after cashing in. John Cena was involved again, as he interfered following a DQ win to defending champion Jinder Mahal, which came about because of Corbin’s interference. Corbin has since won the André The Giant Memorial Battle Royal and King of the Ring.

Carmella (2017)
Defeated: Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Natalya, and Tamina (twice)
Carmella’s historical Money In The Bank victory was marred with controversy, not once, but twice. WWE’s Women’s Division had finally got a slice of the pie, as 2017 marked the first time they would get their own white briefcase to challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Despite MITB matches having no rules, she was stripped of the briefcase two days after winning it because of James Ellsworth’s huge assist. He climbed the ladder and retrieved the briefcase for her, but there had never been any rules introduced to stop anyone outside the match doing this, so technically they didn’t break any rules.
The General Manager Daniel Bryan ordered a rematch on an episode of SmackDown with the same competitors. Despite Ellsworth being banned from ringside, he entered the match and helped her win again. This time, Carmella physically grabbed the case herself, and although Ellsworth helped her despite being banned from ringside, Daniel Bryan did nothing about it and let her keep the case. Carmella held it for a record 287 days, longer than anyone else in history, and won the SmackDown Women’s title from Charlotte Flair after she was attacked The IIconics, Billie Kay & Peyton Royce.

Braun Strowman (2018)
Defeated: Bobby Roode, Finn Bálor, Kevin Owens, Kofi Kingston*, Rusev, Samoa Joe, and The Miz
It became the fourth MITB contract in two years to either fail or end in controversy. For the record, Braun Strowman was the third man to announce his cashing in ahead of time, it marked the only occasion it would be contested in Hell In A Cell, and it was the first time to be cashed in for the Universal Championship. Strowman would challenge title holder Roman Reigns at the PPV with Mick Foley as Special Guest Referee.
To date, it remains the only cash-in match to end in a No Contest, because Brock Lesnar entered Hell In A Cell and destroyed Strowman & Reigns. Paul Heyman used pepper spray on the special referee Mick Foley. Because of this, the match had to be thrown out despite Hell In A Cell having no rules. Again, the booking was heavily questioned by the WWE Universe.

Alexa Bliss (2018)
Defeated: Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Ember Moon, Lana, Naomi, Natalya, and Sasha Banks
For the first time since Dean Ambrose cashed in during the 2016 Money In The Bank PPV, Alexa Bliss copied this feat with some controversy, but not enough to see the decision overturned like with Carmella. It was the first-and-only time a MITB contract has been cashed in on the Raw Women’s Champion.
During a title match between champion Nia Jax & Ronda Rousey, Bliss entered the ring and attacked both competitors with the briefcase. It meant that Rousey won the match by DQ, but Bliss cashed in straight after and defeated Jax to become the Raw Women’s Champion for the third time.

Bayley (2019)
Defeated: Carmella, Dana Brooke, Ember Moon, Mandy Rose, Naomi, Natalya, and Nikki Cross
Bayley has come a long way since she won Money In The Bank as the hugger. It feels like a long time ago, but it was only the other year. She didn’t wait around too long to cash it in, as later on the same show she helped Becky Lynch to fend off Lacey Evans and Charlotte Flair, with the latter having just beaten her for the SmackDown Women’s title.
Bayley noticed the opportunity in front of her and took it, not only claiming the SmackDown title for the first time, but also becoming the first woman to complete the Triple Crown Championship; including Raw, SmackDown & NXT titles. To date, she is the last woman to cash in her Money In The Bank contract.

Brock Lesnar (2019)
Defeated: Ali, Andrade, Baron Corbin, Drew McIntyre, Finn Bálor, Randy Orton, and Ricochet
Brock Lesnar is the trolliest Money In The Bank winner of all time. After returning from yet another hiatus, he insisted on being in the ladder match to decide the new MITB holder. Fans were interested to see him in this scenario, because Lesnar rarely works in multi-man matches outside of the Royal Rumble, and has never worked with ladders.
What could have been an exciting encounter quickly turned sour when it was clear he wasn’t entering, so the match started without. All anyone could think about is whether Lesnar would show up, or if something had happened to him. Very late in to the match, after the competitors had destroyed each other, Lesnar entered, finished them off, climbed the ladder, and claimed the contract. Needless to say, it was the most infuriating way to end a Money In The Bank ladder match.
Just to take it to yet another troll level, Lesnar adopted a funny head banging routine where he would listen to his imaginary jukebox playing his theme through his briefcase. This escalated when he customized his case to have a set of speakers on the side he listened in to. No one had ever treated the MITB contract like this before, and it’s probably right to assume it won’t happen again.
Brock Lesnar had been a super serious figure devoid of personality since returning to WWE in 2012, so it was refreshing to see him having fun and showing charisma like he previously showed in his first run while feuding with the likes of Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero. The whole point of this? It was so Lesnar could get revenge on Seth Rollins, who had taken the title from him at WrestleMania 35. For the first time in MITB history, Brock successfully cashed in on Rollins and won the Universal title at Extreme Rules, immediately after he & Becky Lynch defended their titles against Baron Corbin & Lacey Evans in Winner Takes All.

Asuka (2020)
Defeated: Carmella, Dana Brooke, Lacey Evans, Nia Jax, and Shayna Baszler
Bayley was the last woman to cash in Money In The Bank, and this statement is true because Asuka never got the chance. It wasn’t because Asuka lost the case, but because it was known to management ahead of time that there would be a surprise to whoever won the MITB contract in the specially made match at WWE HQ.
On the following episode of Raw, the Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch had an announcement to make. Lynch told the world that she was with child, so she had to relinquish the title due to her pregnancy. She asked Asuka to join her in the ring. The champion told Asuka that when she won the ladder match the day before, it wasn’t to win the briefcase; it was to crown the new champion. Asuka was so excited and congratulated Lynch on her announcement before ecstatically celebrating the victory.
This marked the only time in history that winning the MITB ladder match resulted in a superstar winning the championship without needing to cash it in.

Otis (2020)
Defeated: AJ Styles, Aleister Black, Daniel Bryan, King Corbin, and Rey Mysterio
The men & women’s MITB ladder matches at WWE HQ happened simultaneously, which is the only time it has ever happened, but the men’s match finished after the women’s. Leading in to this, Otis had become increasingly popular among the WWE Universe, but his victory was met with a mixed reception. Some felt he wasn’t ready for a big push, while others thought he was over enough to warrant it. While holding the contract, Otis began carrying a smaller version of the case, which was often called his lunch box.
Seeing him as unworthy, The Miz targeted his contract, and it was found that he would sometimes carry meat in the bigger briefcase while the contract was safely stored in his lunch box. Mandy Rose & Tucker helped him through this period, but it came to an abrupt end when his long time Heavy Machinery tag team partner turned on him. The Miz challenged him for the contract at Hell In A Cell, and Otis’ dreams of challenging for a WWE Championship was shattered. He became the second man in history to lose the MITB briefcase without having the chance to cash it in. Not only that, but he lost Mandy Rose after she was drafted away. Otis went from being on top of the world to nothing in a matter of weeks.

The Miz (2020)
Defeated: Otis
Emulating Edge back in 2007, The Miz was crafty enough to become only the second man to win a Money In The Bank contract without going through a ladder match. He weaseled his way in by placing doubt in Otis’ mind and by manipulating his long-time friend Tucker. With his friend John Morrison, their game plan came to fruition, and The Miz promised he wouldn’t waste this opportunity like Otis would have.
After several unsuccessful cash ins, The Miz picked his moment just right, which was after Drew McIntyre retained his title in an Elimination Chamber match. Bobby Lashley attacked McIntyre afterward, and The Miz took advantage. He created history in a few ways with this victory.
He became the first man to cash in and win the WWE Championship for a second time. Like CM Punk, he became only the second man to hold two MITB contracts. There’s the fact he won the WWE title ten years apart using the same method. Also, he became the first two-time Grand Slam Champion in WWE history.
