Mustafa Ali was released by WWE despite being scheduled to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the North American Title at NXT No Mercy.
Mysterio defended the title against Trick Williams instead, who ended up winning. They will have a rematch on tonight’s episode of WWE NXT.
Contrary to reports, there were actually plans for Ali to have a run as the North American Champion, according to Fightful Select. This is why NXT officials were frustrated by his release.
Originally, Ali was supposed to cost Dragon Lee the match against Mysterio on the September 25 episode of RAW. This would have set up a triple threat match at No Mercy, with Ali coming out on top. Shawn Michaels, Ali, and NXT creative had tentative plans for Ali on the brand until March 2024.
