In a recent interview with David Dennis Jr. of ESPN, Cody Rhodes discussed a plethora of topics ahead of challenging the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, in the main event of WrestleMania 39.

Recalling his meeting with Vince McMahon before his return to WWE in early 2022, Rhodes stated that he didn’t intend to sign a deal at the meeting but left wondering if he would sign. He said,

“I wasn’t going in there to sign. And I left thinking, ‘Are you about to sign?’ I really wanted the meeting to be about saying I’m sorry for [how I left]. I hope you guys are sorry about some things too. I wanted to hear that I was right about one specific thing: Stardust had run its course. Sometimes you need to see the destination for the journey. And that was something I wasn’t getting from anybody. I told Vince McMahon I was the best wrestler in the world. I think I have been for a while. And he didn’t argue with me about that.”

Cody also shared his desire to command the respect that someone like Roman Reigns does after having done so much for WWE, and shared his belief that their upcoming match at WrestleMania 39 is bigger than just the two of them. He added,

“Just to see the respect he commands because of what he’s done for WWE. I’ve never seen anything like it. Roman takes on that sense of royalty. That’s really special because that’s what’s happening in Mania — two families who really both want to leave with the title.”
