On a recent edition of the “IMPAULSIVE” podcast, WWE Superstar John Cena recalled the infamous botched finish of the 2005 Men’s Royal Rumble Match, when he and Batista both fell out of the ring.

Cena tried to perform an FU on Batista but The Animal countered with a Batista Bomb. Cena blocked with a headscissors takedown, sending both men over the top rope and touching the floor at the same time. The original plan was for Batista to win the match.

The referees for the RAW brand believed Batista to be the winner while the SmackDown officials believed Cena to be the victor.

The confusion caused Vince McMahon to come to the ring and restart the match with the final two participants.

Batista eliminated Cena following a spinebuster to win the match.

You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:

On the finish to the Royal Rumble 2005 match being his fault: “It was not Dave’s fault, it was on me. I am very bad at rotating backwards, so it was my fault.”

On Vince McMahon guiding them to the finish: “To the testament of the work ethic and … just the absolute gumption and dedication of Vince McMahon, with torn quads, he gets himself in the ring and gives us the guidance to finish the event. He is the authority figure in WWE, he can say ‘restart the match.’ We restart it and Dave wins.”
