As previously reported, CM Punk opened last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite by calling out “Hangman” Adam Page as Punk tried to challenge him to a title match and called him a coward before moving on to Jon Moxley.
Punk’s callout wasn’t planned for the show, and he went off script. Punk reportedly took issue with some promo material leading up to the AEW World Championship match at Double or Nothing in May on an episode of Dynamite.
The belief among the wrestlers in the locker room was that Page “went into business for himself” and Punk used last week’s promo as a “receipt.”
During an appearance on Busted Open Radio, AEW President Tony Khan commented on the situation:
“It’s unresolved anger, I think, from the world title match at Double or Nothing and we had not really tied up all those issues. CM Punk made one appearance to wrestle after Double or Nothing and it was immediately after that he got injured and was forced to step away. There was clearly some stuff that never got resolved at Double or Nothing. Then, immediately, jumped into somebody who has challenged him, in not a type of match we’ve ever had in AEW before. We’ve had interim championships established, but we’ve never had an Interim World Champion or an Undisputed World Championship match like this.”
