Quick Hits Results:
- Women’s WarGames Match: Raquel Gonzalez, Cora Jade, Io Shirai and Kay Lee Ray defeated Toxic Attraction (Mandy Rose, Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne) and Dakota Kai by pinfall.
- NXT Tag Team Championship Match: Imperium (c) retained over Kyle O’Reilly and Von Wagner by pinfall.
- Hair vs Hair Match: Cameron Grimes defeated Duke Hudson by pinfall.
- NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match: Roderick Strong (c) retained the title over Joe Gacy by pinfall.
- Men’s WarGames Match: Bron Breakker, Carmelo Hayes, Grayson Waller and Tony D’Angelo defeated Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, Pete Dunne and LA Knight by pinfall.
Author’s POV, Running Commentary & Thoughts:
Kickoff
- Matt Camp’s got a shaved head. Did he lose a Hair vs Hair match?
- I don’t know about you, but I’m not feeling like this is a big pay-per-view, despite how it could be the last time we see Johnny Gargano and/or Kyle O’Reilly and how some people could go up to the main roster after this.
- It’s just not WarGames without William Regal shouting the name. But here’s hoping this is a great show. It’s about to start, so let’s get ready!
Women’s WarGames Match
- Dakota Kai’s sporting a crazier hairstyle to match her new “unhinged” edge. Nice touch. We’re starting off with Kai and Kay Lee Ray, both wielding baseball bats.
- Kendo sticks are in play. That didn’t take long. We knew that would happen, though, as those are WWE’s favorite weapons from the past decade.
- KLR wasn’t able to break the kendo sticks when slamming Kai on them between the ropes. Not the biggest botch or anything, but one of the first noteworthy things to talk about in this match.
- Coming up next to give the babyface team the advantage is…Cora Jade.
- It’s strange seeing the babyfaces have a 2-on-1 scenario.
- Gigi Dolin is next, which pleases the crowd. She brings in a trash can and a bag that we’ve yet to see the contents of.
- Io Shirai is next for the faces, bringing some more weaponry (mostly chairs and trash cans) into the ring.
- Jacy Jayne gets added to the heels. The fans have been clamoring for some tables and now they’re getting it.
- Cora Jade took out Jacy Jayne with a Swanton Bomb through a table and is holding her arm. This may be how they write her out of the match so there’s no longer an advantage.
- Maybe not, as Io Shirai just popped Jade’s shoulder back in. Nice touch!
- Time for Raquel Gonzalez, who wants to get some retribution with a shovel, but doesn’t get a chance to quite use it yet.
- Gonzalez gets a double powerbomb. Shirai does a moonsault on top of Kai who had a trash can around her. Some decent stuff, but nothing we haven’t seen better of before.
- Mandy Rose is finally in to round out the teams, meaning the match has truly “started” and someone can actually win now.
- Team Babyface is in one ring with kendo sticks (well, minus Cora, who is sitting on the floor holding her arm and not contributing). KLR teased potentially hitting her, but didn’t.
- Jade kicks out after a knee to the head from Rose.
- Oh wow, then Jade actually scores the pin for her team over Jayne. I didn’t see that coming. Io Shirai was my pick to get the pin.
- Fans chanted “this is awesome” for this. I thought it was decent, but maybe my least favorite WarGames match so far.
The last vignette for Tiffany Stratton aired again.
Another video package highlighted Brooks Jensen and Josh Briggs.
Mei Ying has passed her spirit into Boa (which will be the explanation for why she’s Wendy Choo now, though they won’t acknowledge that).
MSK’s journey to meeting the shaman is quickly recapped. Meet “the shaman” this upcoming Tuesday.
Backstage, Team Black and Gold are pumping each other up.
NXT Tag Team Championship Match
- Lots of chops going on in this match.
- Von Wagner is looking equal parts confident and a little green, in my opinion. He’s a little wonky, but he looks like he’s giving it his all instead of doubting himself. Hopefully, he’ll find his rhythm in this match and really get rolling.
- Marcel Barthel’s a great heel. Very underrated.
- The crowd’s digging Fabian Aichner’s ability to catch Von Wagner on his shoulders and slam him. I’ve been a fan of Aichner since the Cruiserweight Classic. Always glad to see him getting some recognition.
- Speaking of Aichner, great springboard moonsault!
- Wade Barrett and Beth Phoenix called it a “technical masterpiece” but I can’t go that far. This was a good match, but not something I’ll put on my Match of the Year list.
- Since O’Reilly took the pin, I’m really thinking he’s leaving. Even more so since he’s staying in the ring and the fans are chanting “Thank you, Kyle.”
- Oh hey. Von Wagner tried to attack him when his back was turned, only for O’Reilly to see it coming and take Wagner out. Now that’s a surprise.
When you think of Ikemen Jiro, you think of Style Strong, not Strong Style. Ikemen means “handsome man.” He shows off his jacket collection.
Santos Escobar and Legado del Fantasma had words for Xyon Quinn ahead of Escobar’s match with him on Tuesday.
Hair vs. Hair Match
- Not too much going on here. Just a normal match. That’s not to say it’s bad, but it’s just generic enough to not warrant any noteworthy discussion.
- Grimes wins with a handful of tights (which Vic Joseph describes as catching Hudson on the river, ha).
- After the match, Hudson tries to take out Grimes and shave his head, anyway. Grimes manages to boot Hudson in the face and regains control of the clippers to shave the center of Hudson’s hair off.
- I’m surprised Grimes won this. I thought for sure he’d lose. Now, I’m curious why they did this for Hudson to shave his head.
A recap of the most recent Grizzled Young Veterans vignettes aired, as well as a rerun of the Draco Anthony spotlight. Also, Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter had a vignette talking about how they love music festivals.
NXT Cruiserweight Championship Match
- To echo what I’ve already said, I don’t understand why Joe Gacy (a heel who is above 205 pounds) is fighting Roderick Strong for this title. It makes me think WWE wants to abandon the Cruiserweight Championship and giving it to Gacy is the next step in eradicating the division.
- Harland doesn’t feel as intimidating ringside as they want him to be. He just looks like someone’s memory of Erick Rowan and Lars Sullivan mashed together.
- I didn’t expect Gacy to jump over the top rope to the outside.
- Harland picking up Ivy Nile? Is this like a King Kong reference of sorts?
- Strong simply wins with his finisher. While I’m more happy about that than sad, as I didn’t want the Gacy situation to happen, I’m going to reiterate that I don’t get why this even happened to begin with, then.
Another Ikemen Jiro vignette? This time, he eats two big slices of pizza, two footlong hot dogs, three gallons of ice cream and has to take a massive shit. I’m not kidding. That’s the joke. NXT 2.0 is doing “I ate too much and I need to take a dump” comedy on pay-per-view just before a commercial for how you should buy tickets to WrestleMania 38.
Kyle O’Reilly has challenged Von Wagner to a steel cage match (or a WarGames match…something involving a steel cage) for Tuesday night. Maybe O’Reilly isn’t sticking around, but he’s just doing the favors to Wagner on his way out and Tuesday is still within the range of his contract.
Men’s WarGames Match
- Starting off will be Carmelo Hayes and Johnny Gargano.
- As much as I would want to see Gargano against a lot of the people in AEW, I don’t want him to leave WWE. My ideal situation is that he moves to the main roster and becomes the next incarnation of Daniel Bryan for Raw/SmackDown as a guy we can watch get to win the world title at WrestleMania. However, the feeling is overwhelming that he’s leaving after this. Hopefully, he’ll have another amazing performance like he almost always does.
- Let’s see what Grayson Waller has to offer now that he’s in the ring with Gargano as the second entrant on Team 2.0
- LOL! Trick Williams shouted “watch out” and chucked a chair into the ring, but very nearly hit Waller of all people. That wasn’t how that was supposed to go.
- I’m not sure what caused it, but Gargano is bleeding now from his nose.
- Pete Dunne enters the fray to help even the odds.
- Gargano and Dunne have crossfaces on their opponents and are kicking the opposite person in the face. Love it.
- Next up for 2.0 is Tony D’Angelo.
- Trick Williams fed D’Angelo some kendo sticks and some tables to bring into the ring. And some trash cans, and some crutches, and a chain. But under the ring was Dexter Lumis! He gave Gargano a thumbs up and walked off.
- D’Angelo padlocked the cage door shut ahead of LA Knight and Tommaso Ciampa being able to join the match. LA Knight decided to climb the cage to get inside that way. Good moment.
- Double dropkick from Gargano and Dunne to Waller stuffed in a trash can.
- Officials are cutting open the chain to allow Breakker and Ciampa their normal access as Dunne keeps working on Waller’s fingers.
- Time for the man who should have been named Rex Steiner, who struggles to break the chain, but eventually gets it. I assume he was supposed to get it in one shot, right?
- Naturally, Breakker destroys everyone.
- Ciampa is last and the match has started.
- Nice reference with Gargano using a crutch on Hayes to save Ciampa as they reflect on their history with that weapon.
- It’s not often we see Gargano able to lawn dart someone like Hayes into a trash can.
- Waller goes through a table, tossed backward by LA Knight.
- Breakker kicks out of an Air Raid Crash onto a trash can.
- Waller hits an elbow drop onto Knight through a table from the top of the cage, but Dunne breaks up a pinfall attempt from D’Angelo. Lots of height for Waller on that jump!
- D’Angelo has brought a crowbar into play, which I think is fitting for his character. He then took out Dunne’s mouth guard and used the crowbar to swing Dunne off the top rope and down to the mat.
- One Final Beat and Willow’s Bell in sync, along with a traditional DIY double kick to the head that would have gotten the finish on Breakker, but Hayes pulled the referee off the count and then nailed Gargano with a low blow.
- Breakker speared Ciampa through the table. This has to be setting up the end.
- Yup. Breakker hits a power slam and pins Ciampa for the win.
