As seen on last night’s episode of AEW Rampage, CM Punk announced that he was injured and will be undergoing surgery in the near future.
According to multiple sources, CM Punk will be undergoing surgery on his foot as early as next week. AEW officials were aware of his injury following the six-man tag team match that took place on Wednesday night’s episode of AEW Dynamite. While the company knew about the injury at that time, there wasn’t any confirmation that Punk would need surgery until Friday afternoon, just hours before AEW Rampage went live. This caused AEW President Tony Khan to scramble to make changes to his long-term booking plans.
As of this writing, there is no word yet on how long he’ll be out of action.
As far as CM Punk relinquishing the title is concerned, that was never considered. In the past, AEW has used an interim championship with the TNT Title. This is similar to what the UFC does when people are injured.
Once CM Punk is fully healed, he will face the interim champion to unify the titles.
