At AEW Full Gear 2022, Chris Jericho successfully retained the ROH World Championship against Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, and Sammy Guevara in a Four-Way title defense.

A month later at ROH Final Battle, Jericho lost the ROH World Title to Castagnoli, ending his reign at 80 days.

While speaking on his Talk Is Jericho podcast, Jericho confirmed that Castagnoli was originally slated to win the ROH World Title in singles action at Full Gear.

However, AEW President Tony Khan improvised the original booking, leading to the Four-Way title match on November 19. Jericho said,

“The cool thing was the idea originally was to do me and Claudio (Castagnoli) at Full Gear.

One other idea was to do me and Bryan (Danielson) at Full Gear for the Ring of Honor Title and then Tony (Khan) had the idea of a three-way, Bryan versus Claudio versus Jericho.

We still weren’t quite feeling it and then Tony, once again — he really is a smart guy. He won the Booker of the Year for a reason. He came up with the idea of putting Sammy (Guevara) in there and making it a four-way. Now we have to figure out how that works storyline-wise and we got it.”

Castagnoli is currently in his second ROH World Title reign and is yet to defend the gold.

Meanwhile, Jericho will face Ricky Starks for the first time ever on the January 4th episode of AEW Dynamite.
