There might be some changes coming to Jim Ross’ role within AEW and on the commentary team.

This started at Sunday’s AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view event and followed up during last night’s AEW Dynamite and Rampage tapings.

At Forbidden Door, Ross only called the final four matches of the show alongside Excalibur, Taz, and NJPW’s Kevin Kelly. The other three announcers were present for the whole show.

For Dynamite, the announce team for the first hour was Excalibur, Taz, and Tony Schiavone. Ross replaced Schiavone for the Blood & Guts match in the second hour.

Ross also called the matches taped after Dynamite for Friday’s episode of Rampage. The only other time the WWE Hall of Famer has called Rampage was for CM Punk’s debut last August.

Dave Meltzer noted on today’s Wrestling Observer Radio that AEW is experimenting with the announce team, and if Tony Khan likes the change, then what happened this week with Ross might be permanent.

Last month, JR announced that he’d signed a contract extension to stay with AEW for another year-and-a-half.
